Some artists have worked collaboratively and several have combined media processes in their work. Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art comes from the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Alabama. Thornton Willis: Structural Abstraction

October 4 – November 16, 2012 | Slideshow

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of paintings by New York artist and UA alumnus Thornton Willis. Willis will be in Tuscaloosa for an artist’s reception on Thursday, October 11 from 6-8 p.m. At 7 p.m., during the reception in the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, he will answer questions about his work.

The exhibit features abstract oil paintings that represent several bodies of work spanning a decade: lattice paintings, triangle paintings and his latest work. What his art works have in common is the “allover surface plane held in tension, between figure and ground, as an interwoven field,” writes Lance Esplund, arts contributor to the Wall Street Journal.

Catch and Release: Brian Novatny, Selected Paintings and Drawings

August 23 – September 21, 2012 | Slideshow

New York artist Brian Novatny brings figurative drawings and paintings to the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art. This exhibition features more than a decade Novatny’s work. Novatny’s figures are both preoccupied and disconnected from narrative, constructed from a litany of elements, whether a patterned fabric, a figure falling, or a June Allyson look-alike. There is a feeling of unease in the work as if his subjects are trapped in the background of the works. Novatny has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Seattle, Saint Louis, Berlin and Frankfurt and is represented by ADA Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. His work is in the collections of Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, Knoxville Museum of Art, Progressive Insurance and Microsoft Corporation. The artist will be lecturing on his work on Wednesday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library on the UA campus. For further information, contact the gallery at 348-1891.

Amy Feger: Local Journeys

July 6 – August 3,  2012
Opening reception:  July 6, 103 Garland Hall 5-7 pm

artwork from the SMGA exhibitionThe Sarah Moody Gallery of Art will feature works by Master of Fine Arts candidate Amy Feger in the exhibition Local Journeys July 6 – August 3 2012.  An opening reception will be held Friday, July 6, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  The public is invited to attend.
Originally from Louisville, KY, where she received her BFA from the University of Louisville, Ms. Feger moved to Montevallo, AL with her partner in 2002. Dividing her time between homes in Montevallo and Tuscaloosa, Feger explores the conceptual and narrative potential of the map as a means of describing place.  She states that each painting is the archaeological remnant of a re-constructed memory of her ritual road trips from home to home for the past three years.  The paintings vary from oil paint to acrylic, from solid surfaces to roadmap “webs.”  This series of works began as a response to the April 27, 2011 tornado.

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Art and Art History. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, and Thursday evening 5:00 – 8:00 pm. We are located at 103 Garland Hall in the heart of the UA campus on Woods Quad. There is no admission charge.

Visitor Parking on Campus

A parking deck at the corner of Hackberry and Campus Drive (Campus Drive runs in front of Bryce Hospital) provides visitor parking at a nominal cost, and is only a five minute walk to Garland Hall.
